Volunteer Opportunities with the Radio Reading Service of Eastern North Carolina:

Producer/Board Operator

A producer determines what articles are read, and in what order. This is done by cutting articles out of a newspaper and/or finding news stories on the internet at newspaper websites, printing the stories and preparing them to be read.

As a board operator, the individual works as a technician, pushing buttons and turning the dials that are necessary to broadcast a program. This is not very complicated and volunteer will be trained in the functions of this job.

The Producer/Board Operator also reads during the broadcast, alternating the reading of articles with a “Reader”.

The producer/board operator comes to the studio at least one hour prior to broadcast time to prepare the program. He or she then reads for one hour. Total time per Event: 2 – 2 ½ hours.

Reader

Reads news articles out loud. This volunteer should have good reading skills and enunciation abilities. Most articles are read “cold”, or without the opportunity to read before the live broadcast. Reader arrives 15-minutes prior to broadcast starting time. Total time per event: 1 ¼ - 1 ½ hours.

A volunteer can work as many events as they wish. Some people work one day per month, others work once a week.

An “Event” is one broadcast, usually 60-minutes long. A volunteer can work as many events as they wish. Some people work one day per month, others work once a week.
